Day 8: Truth

Truth…it’s tricky thing because something that may be true for me may not be true to you. Your perspective or upbringing may tell you something very different then what mine did and often times our perspective dictates our truth. An example could be with the question, does a straw have one hole or two? Depending on how you view it one could argue either way, just depends on how you look at it, the way you are going about your argument, etc…

If we wanted to just simplify it all you could say that truth are facts, and facts are truth. But is that actually true? Because truth also is based on the popular opinion. It is based on often a reliable source. Is truth what the person with the eloquent philosophical speech says? Is it what the news/media tell us? Is it witness that proves a trustworthy word? Is it the outcome of what was stated? Or is the actions and character of the person who gave it? Again what is truth?

Here in the United States there are lots of opinions, lots of voices and lots of facts, and figures given to us every single day. How do we discern what is true and what is false? How do we know what truth is with the cacophony of sound always in our ears? Because what would happen if it all just turned silent, what do you think we would hear and learn to be true? Would we actually hear the One who holds all truth?

Jesus in John 14:6 says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life…” God when speaking to Moses in Exodus 3:14 says, “I am who I am…” Here in both these verses God is telling us who He is, revealing that He is the way, He is the truth and He is the life. And with what He shared with Moses back in Exodus He is who He is and that does not waver. So, how do we truly know this? How do we know truly that what Jesus spoke was true?

For how do we know truth? “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32) We will know the truth when we come to know Jesus and the Truth will set us free.

God, thank you for truth. In a world filled with so many voices we ask that Your would be the resounding echo in our hearts and minds. That Your truth would be our firm foundation. Teach us, show us, guide us into the the truth. May we seek and may we find you and when we do may we dance in joy knowing that the Truth has set us free! Renew our hearts, renew our minds, so that we may walk in the way of everlasting. Amen.
